The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially launched campaigns for the forthcoming Local Council One (LC I) chairperson and village women committee elections in Nyendo-Mukungwe Division, Masaka City.
The party leaders urged residents to elect leaders who will promote accountable and people-centred leadership at the grassroots level.
The campaigns were launched in Kibissi Parish, Kadduggala, and were led by Nyendo-Mukungwe Division Mayor Ronald Kasekende, who was accompanied by party leaders and candidates contesting for various village positions.
The campaign team traversed several villages, including Kibissi A, Kinyerere A, Kinyerere B, Namagoma, Mirembe and Katera, where they held rallies and conducted door-to-door engagements with residents.
Addressing supporters, Kasekende asked voters to support NUP candidates, arguing that electing the party’s flag bearers at village level would strengthen grassroots structures and improve service delivery.
“The foundation of good leadership begins at the village level. When you elect NUP leaders as LC I chairpersons and women committee representatives, you will have leaders who understand your daily challenges and are ready to serve all residents without discrimination,” Kasekende said.
He said village leaders play a key role in resolving community disputes, mobilising residents for development programmes and linking communities with higher levels of government.
Kasekende urged residents to participate peacefully in the elections and reject intimidation, saying every eligible voter has the constitutional right to freely choose their leaders.
He also encouraged communities to remain united after the elections and work together for development regardless of political affiliation.
NUP candidates contesting for different village positions pledged to prioritise transparency, community development and improved service delivery if elected.
Fred Zziwa Kunsa Kewerimidde, who is contesting for the LC I chairperson seat in Katera Village on the NUP ticket, promised to promote unity among residents and ensure that local leaders remain accessible and accountable.
“If entrusted with leadership, I will work closely with residents to address the challenges affecting our village. We want leadership that listens to the people, promotes development and fulfils the promises that have for years remained unimplemented,” Kewerimidde said.
He said his priorities include improving sanitation, strengthening community security, supporting youth initiatives and ensuring government programmes reach intended beneficiaries without favouritism.
Residents who attended the campaign meetings welcomed the candidates and called for peaceful campaigns throughout the election period.
They expressed hope that whoever wins will fulfil their pledges and focus on improving livelihoods within their communities.
The LC I chairperson and village women committee elections are expected to attract candidates from various political parties and independents, with political organisations intensifying grassroots mobilisation across the country ahead of the polls.
